Markus Rhoten has been the Principal Timpanist of the New York Philharmonic since 2006. Born in Hanover, Germany, in 1978, he started his musical journey in Berlin, where he studied at the College of Arts. After further training with the National Opera Orchestra in Mannheim, he earned a spot in the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich. By 2002, he had become the principal timpanist of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra under Lorin Maazel. Over the years, Markus has played with several top orchestras across Europe and worked with renowned conductors like Riccardo Muti, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Valery Gergiev. His talent has taken him to stages with the Zurich Opera Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, and more.
